Followers don’t pay the bills. These most important metrics do
Hey, it’s Arvin.
So I figured something out about marketing the other day that kinda blew my mind. Had to share it.
For the longest time, I thought having a ton of followers was the main thing.
Like, that’s how you win, right?
More followers = you’re crushing it. No new followers? Clearly, you’re failing at life.
But then I took a step back and actually looked at the numbers… and yeah, turns out that’s not it.
Because it doesn’t matter how many followers you have if they aren’t checking out your stuff.
Or buying. Or doing anything really. That’s the part that matters.
And I was ignoring some of the numbers that actually tell you if things are working.
You know, the most important metrics.
Engagement
First up: engagement.
And I don’t mean likes.
Likes are fine, but are people actually talking to you? Commenting? Sharing? Saving?
If they’re not, it’s kinda like yelling into the void.
I’ve seen people (including me) get way more engagement just by being a real human.
Asking random questions. Sharing stuff that happened behind the scenes.
People love that.
They don’t wanna feel like they’re just being pitched to all the time.
They wanna feel like they’re in on something.
The more real you are, the more people will wanna hang out with you.
And then? Bam. You’ve got a community.
And community is what turns engagement into one of your most important metrics.
Because if no one’s engaging, what’s the point?
Traffic Sources
Next—traffic source.
Which is basically a fancy way of saying—”where are people even finding you?”
And yes, this is one of the most important metrics you can track.
I assumed all people were coming from me blasting out tweets on X (aka Twitter, but I’m still calling it Twitter. Sorry, Elon.)

Nope. Turns out, a bunch of people were showing up from places I wasn’t even thinking about. Like Notion marketplaces and other sites.
I looked back and realized: oh dang, hundreds of people grabbed my free product over there.
So obviously, I threw more stuff up on those platforms.
And all linked back to my store. Easy win.
Knowing where your traffic is coming from = huge.
Once I saw that, I stopped wasting time on stuff that wasn’t moving the needle.
It’s one of those most important metrics I wish I’d paid attention to earlier.
Conversion Rate
Okay, conversion rate.
This one’s big. It’s hands down one of the most important metrics in your whole setup.
This tells you if people are actually doing anything. Clicking a link. Signing up. Buying.
You can have all the traffic in the world, but if no one’s buying… well, that’s a problem.
So how do you fix it? Make it easy for people to say “yep, I’m in.”
Clear buttons. Simple pages. Obvious offers.
And trust!
Show off reviews. Share screenshots of happy customers. Let people know you’re legit.
Also… your page should load fast.
If it takes forever, people bounce. We’re impatient creatures.
Even tiny changes here can get more people to say yes.
And that’s the whole point, right?
Conversion rate might just be the most important metric, because it tells you if your business is actually working.
Bounce Rate
Last one: bounce rate.
This one shows if people land on your page and immediately leave.
And yep, it’s one of those sneaky most important metrics people don’t talk about enough.
When people leave fast, they’re not sticking around long enough to see how awesome you are.
I worked with a brand where we cleaned up their site, made it super clear what they were about, and poof—their bounce rate dropped.
Fixing your bounce rate is like patching holes in a leaky bucket.
Otherwise, you’re just losing folks before they even have a chance to hang out.
Quick Recap
- Traffic Sources = where are people finding you?
- Engagement = are they interacting with you?
- Conversion Rate = are they doing anything?
- Bounce Rate = are they leaving too fast?
These are the most important metrics that actually matter.
Not follower counts. Not vanity numbers.
